The 6 Biggest Myths & Mistakes of Online Communities
What are the things that people assume about community building that drive you completely BONKERS?! Here are the worst culprits I hear:
You need to be an extrovert to create an online community.
People believe that social media and community are the same thing and that you can treat your community the same way you do an Instagram following.
People believe that engagement and moderation just happen by magic. And that they are synonymous with growth (It’s not “build it and they will come” or “set it and forget it”).
People begin with the platform and content calendar, instead of purpose, first.
People believe that there are set benchmarks and metrics that everyone should share and duplicate. They have to be customized.
People believe that simply saying the word community makes one appear, and that you can voluntell people what to do or persuade them to care about things they otherwise would never care about. If we want to create powerful outcomes, we can’t treat community spaces as transactional spaces.
